Artist’s statements

Sarah Nadin/ Claire Reynolds

A collaborative mission combining dance, photography and digital processes. Created from the thoughts of the people of North Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent this project aims to unveil aspects of the area’s contemporary identity. Public response will inspire a contemporary movement piece which will be photographed and displayed in the public realm.

Louise Wood

I believe that Cross Heath may have a particularly high tenant turnover, and I wish to contact past residents of one flat or house, bringing the lives of individuals unknown to each other together. This ceramic response piece will collage together their stories, memories, photos, thoughts, and emotions.

Chris Twigg

I’ve been on a ride: through working in the arts, in the design industry and teaching graphic design at University. Art and design with a social and ethical focus is now my main interest, striving to make a positive change, dealing with issues of real importance.

Claire Barber

I am proposing to respond to Stoke-on-Trent’s bus network. The site of the work would be contained in the bus ticket and the Smart Multi-operator bus ticket. I hope the work may generate an imaginative, personal and poetic reflection that a local bus journey within the Stoke-on-Trent area can provoke.

(After quotation by Zygmunt Bauman)

The philosopher and Sociologist Zygmunt Bauman talks here about the natural bonds that traditional communities one had and the way in which external influences have prompted individuals to widen their horizons and question their own identities. Bauman argues that once this questioning has begun the community becomes unnatural and defunct. The result is a disconcerted group of individuals who begin a search for ‘people like us’, or as Bauman describes ‘peg communities’ where they can hang their own experiences together in the hope of rebuilding a sense of community.

My proposal for Place, Space & Identity 2 is to create a location to place the ‘peg’ and opportunities to ‘hang’ individual experiences together.

Update on Clare Reynolds’ and Sarah Nadin’s ‘Benches’ project

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Clare and Sarah have now finished the research stage of their project ‘Benches’. After spending four weeks trawling the towns and parks of Stoke-on-Trent to find folks on benches (not easy in January!) they have been warmed by peoples willingness to talk, and be photographed! Clare and Sarah wish to extend their thanks to the many people who took the time to sit and chat with them.

Now Sarah is busying herself compiling all the photographs, testing out different benches and different backgrounds for the final image while Clare is choreographing a movement piece using recordings and stimulus from the research so far. Through this project they have commissioned local producer Paul Rogerson who has followed them about whilst recording sounds from the city to create an exciting original sound score which will accompany the dance piece in some spontaneous performances around the city, watch this space for more details….
